REMAKING OF COURT
AMERICAN CONTROVERSY CRITICISM AND SUPPORT WASHINGTON, Feb. 13. Alignments in the increasingly bitter battle over President Roosevelt's plans for the enlargement of the Supreme Court bench were sharply drawn to-day. Senator W. H. King avowed himself an opponent after a visit to White House with several Congressional colleagues in an effort to obtain the I resident’s consent to a compromise. Me indicated that Mr. Roosevelt was determined to “remake” the court tins session of Congress.
Senator C. Glass announced his opposition and declared that he would take the floor in the debate against the plan, as also did Senator B. K. Wheeler, who declared that tile proposals were undemocratic, non-progressive and fundamentally unsound. ‘ Senator R. M. la Toilette, the recognised leader of the rnid-Western Prozressives, in a radio address to the nation, supported the plan and asked the people not to submit to the forces of judicial usurpation which it is within the constitutional powers of Congress to remedy.”
