APPEAL TO FARMERS
BLIND INSTITUTE FUNDS ORGANISER’S P.B. VISIT Visiting Poverty Ray in the interests of the New Zealand Institute for the blind, Mr. George Aslidowne will make a special appeal to farmers of the district on the occasion of the ewe fair to be held shortly at the Matawhero yards. His appeal will he for cash contributions to the funds of the institute, which are supject to a drain of approximately £9OOO per year for the upkeep of the institute itself and for the services rendered to 1000 sightless people throughout the Dominion.
To some extent, the institute secures financial returns from the work of inmates and trainees, but it is invariably necessary to seek assistance from sympathisers with the work for blind people. This district’s sympathy with the work was well exemplified recently when the Institute Band made its tour of Poverty Bay and the East Coast, and a further opportunity will be given during the current visit of Mr. Aslidowne.
In many districts, good returns - on behalf of the Institute have been secured through a system of donations of stock from fanners, and it was hoped that this system would operate in Poverty Bay. It has been found, however, that it is not entirely convenient to stockowners ami to the stockbrokers’ representatives to carry out sales of donated stock in connection with the forthcoming ewe fair, and a direct appeal for cash contributions is to be made to those gathered for the fair.
Any sympathiser who does not have an opportunity of attending the fair, or of making a contribution through the organiser may forward contributions through the Poverty Bay Stockbrokers’ Association, through any member of'the committee of that body, through Mr. Charlesi H. Bull, local representative of the Blind Institute, or by post direct to the institute itself. Deeply appreciative of the support given to the institution in the past, the trustees do not wish to approach for a second contribution those who have already assisted; but it is probable that many residents of Poverty Bay and the East Coast will wish to share some of the new prosperity with an organisation filling so vital a need in the community.
