BRITAIN’S STRENGTH
“GREATER THAN EVER” NO LONGER has TO BEG SYDNEY, Jan. 28. The armaments of Great Britain are now more powerful than those ot any other country, according to Sir Harry Smith, n. director of Dean, ,Smith, and Grace, Limited, of Keighley, Yorkshire, who is visiting Sydney. “She is stronger than she has over been,” ho said.
During the war the company manufactured lSlb. high explosive shells for the British Government.
“No one knows how powerful Britain is at the moment,” .Sir Harry Smith said. “It is significant, however, that Britain is no longer adopting a begging attitude towards foreign nations. She is becoming .stern. That is a sign of her increasing strength.” Sir Harry Smith said that it would be a. long time before any nation started another war. Italy and Germany wore as “poor as church mice,” and did not want war for years.
“Every manufacturer of machinery in Australia should ensure that their factories can be converted at quick notice for the manufacture of armaments,” he said. “Remember, it would take four weeks to send shells and weapons from England. During the war, I converted my lathe works into armaments works, and turned out 10,00(1 to 12,000 181 b. shells a week. The factory worked 120 hours a week, in two (50-hour shifts, and 85 per cent of the labour was female.”
