To be swept from the deck ot the Matangi and to clutch successfully at the rail as he went overboard was the experience of Air. It. A. Shearer, compositor, aged 27, of Island Ray, when the vessel was crossing Cook Strait on Saturday.
ATr. Shearer, who is a member ot. the Institute band, was making the crossing during a special daylight trip of the Matangi on Saturday lor the purpose of taking bandsmen to the New Zealand championships at Nelson. The vcjssel experienced a rough trip in Cook Strait, there being a heavy sea running. Air. Shearer was on the lower after deck and was walking from one side to the other, when the vessel gave a sudden lurch which sent him sliding on the wet deck. His shin struck a raft seat and lie went; hurtling over the side of the vessel.
Luckily he had the presence of mind fo grasp one of the lower iron railings and he was thus saved from a headlong flight into the heavy sea from which rescue under ihe conditions would have been impossible.
