DOMINION FISHERIES MINISTER URGES NEED (Per Press Association.) ROTORUA, Inst night. The opinion that scientific research is urgently required to maintain New Zealand’s fisheries, both saltwater and fresh, was expressed by the Minister for Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, in the course of an interview before liis departure from Rotorua on Saturday.

The Minister mentioned that the Government hail decided to make fish research a State activity and said that the work would bo closely prosecuted. lie hail gone very thoroughly into the position of the country’s fisheries and lie was satisfied that New Zealand had not exhausted its knowledge of its saltwater and fresh fish. As an instance, he had found no set of anglers whose views were alike when asked for opinions regarding the improvement of freshwater fishing. He was satisfied that intense research was now necessary to guide the authorities in the proper development of fisheries.

The Fish Research Department established by the Government, was, lie added, working well and would, he felt .s-urc, be of great value to the country. It would be a calamity if New Zealand’s fishing deteriorated.
