RETRENCHMENT IN JAPAN
CUT IN BIG BUDGET COMMERCE REASSURED (Reed. Fob. .13, 1 p.m.) LONDON, Fob. 12. The Tokio correspondent, of The Times says that the Japanese Cabinet has approved of a revised Budget totalling 2,769,C00,C00 yen, which is 460,000,000 more than last year, but shows a. saving of 270,000,000 compared with the previous Cabinet’s Budget. The army and navy have each reduced their demands by 23,000,000 yen, and the Home Office, has cut off 162,000,000, chiefly sacrificing proposed grants for rural relief. This sacrifice is likely to
be vigorously criticised. Whether the retrenchment is clue to the coiiieu'tioii that rising prices will foster social unrest, or the widespread unpopularity which tlre army encountered in (lie recent crisis, it reassures commercial circles and ensures public confidence. The Government is modifying the proposed tariff increases.
