SURPRISE PARTY (Herald Correspondent.) A crowd of happy young people arrived unexpectedly lust .\londay evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Budland, Te Araroa. (.James and dancing were soon in progress, and if was not until the early hours of the morning thai supper was served, and after the singing of •"For They Are Jolly Good Feliows ' the party broke up. • Those present were Mr. and Airs. S. Kudland, Mr. and Mrs. il. Dickson, Mrs. M. Halliwell; Misses J. and N. Kudland, N. Halliwell, It. McLean, P. Mules, M. Cooper (Gisborne), J. and I. Allen, J. Scliofield. F. Hughes, 'l'. Hunt and M. Jackson; Messrs. K. Metcalfe, A. McLean, C. Newby, I'. Hunt. J. Tyrell and 0. Wheeler.
Miss Mary Cooper, who lias been spending the holidays with Mrs. P. ,'laylor, has returned to her home at Wainui Beach, Gisborne. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent on Tuesday, when .Mrs. If. U. Fairlie 'arranged a riverside picnic. Unfortunately the weatluy was cold and dull, so the swimming pool was not as inviting as it would have been had Die weather been more favourable, flames and competitions were played and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Later a dainty afternoon tea was served under the trees. Those present were Mesdames If. Fairlie, N. Branson, H. Clarke, 0. Hughes, and P. •Taylor; Misses R. Fairlie, W. and B. Metcalfe. P. Mules, M. Cooper (Gisborne), C, M. and E. Halliwell, .7. and M. Kudland, D. Cowan, F. Hughes, and N. Micheals (Hamilton); Masters B. Cooper (Gisborne), and J. Micheals (Hamilton).
