BUSINESS MAN'S WILL

LARGE SUM IN BEQUESTS EX- DUNEDIN RESIDENT The estate of Mr. John Edmond, of Surry Hills, Melbourne, formerly a prominent figure in the Dunedin firm of John Edmond, Limited, who died at his home in Australia last month, has been sworn for probate at. under £105,000. Under the terms of Mr. Edmond's will, no fewer than 28 bequests, totalling £4525, have been made to public organisations and philanthropic institutions in Dunedin. In addition one legacy of £2OO has been bequeathed to the Jubilee Institute for the Blind in Auckland. These generous benefactions, which embrace practically every hospital in Otago and some in Southland, are typical of the open-handedness of the late Mr. Edmond, who for many years since his retirement to Melbourne made annual gifts to charitable and other institutions in Otago. THE PRINCIPAL GIFTS.

The chief beneficiaries under ' the will are the Presbyterian Social Service Association at Dunedin, and the University of Otago, each of which receives £IOOO.

Bequests made under the will are as follows:—■

Sums of £IOOO to the Presbyterian Social Service Association at Dunedin for the work of its homes at Anderson's Bay, and to the University of Otago for the erection or extension of the home science hostel, the income on the amount to accumulate until the capital and the income are sufficient, with any other money available, for trie purpose stated. \ sum of £SOO to the matrons of the Batehelor ana St. Helens Hospitals, the income derived from this sum to lie vested each year in executives named and to be devoted to gifts ami Christmas cheer for the inmates and nurses of the hospitals. In the event of either institution at any time becoming defunct the fund will be vested in the matron of the Dunedin Public Hospital. INSTITUTE FOE THE BLIND.

Sums of £250 to the Presbyterian Social Service Association, to be devoted to the Ross Home; to tne Society for the Health of Women and Children (Plunket Society); to the Dunedin Early Settlers' Association; -and to the Dunedin Art Gallery to be expended on the purchase of works of •ut, preference to be given to NewZealand artists.

Sums of £21)0 to Knox College for library extension and replenishment, to the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Auckland, and to the Little Sisters of the Poor, Anderson's Bay. A sum of £l5O to the Salvation Army for the work of its homOM in Otago and Southland. Sums of £IOO to the Dunedin Amenities Society, and to the Dunedin I'ree Kindergarten Association. . OTHER SMALLER SUMS.

Sums (if £3O to the Otago Society 'for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, to the Invert-argil! Hospital, and to the Oamaru Hospital. Rums of £25 each to the South Otago Hospital, Banfurly ' Hospital, Vincent Hospital, Cromwell Hospital, Frankton Hospital, Tuapeka Hospital, Wallace and Fiord Hospital, Tapanui Hospital, Seddon Memorial Hospital (Gore), Middlemareh Cottage Hospital, Port Chalmers Cottage Hospital", Kaitangala Cottage Hospital and Lome iann Hospital.
