Replying in tbe House of Commons to Mr. John 0 dagger, the Labour member for'Claytoii, who asked a question about the dismissal of a man named H. S. K. Fast hope from the army signals .at Devonport, after over 12 years’ service, without, reason, and later iroin the Devonport- dockyard after one week’s service, the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Samuel Monro, stated that Kasthope bad been employed at Devonport for a particular job which ended after a week.
Sir ,Samuel Hoare added that. b.astliope was not dismissed from the dockyard. where he was engaged on a casual basis as a, litter, as a result of comniunieations lrom the War (Jlhee. Mr. J agger said he would raise the subject, again at the earliest possible moment.
The Communist- member for Fife, Mr. W. Gallaelier, asked on whose instructions plain-clothes police were called to the Unicorn Gate, Portsmouth dockyard, on January 27. to confiscate leaflets relating to' the recent, dismissals al Slieernoss and Devonport, which were being distributed there. Sir Samuel Hoare replied that, the naval authorities were informed of the intention to distribute leaflets, the dissemination of which would he contrary to the regulations. They drew the attention of the Portsmouth' city police, who were responsible for flic action.
