Wairoa A. & P. Society’s Show

Additional appointments included seating accommodation around the horse ring, which was greatly appreciated by the crowd. It was proposed to* place further seats on the ground as finances permit. A modern cloak room for .ladies erected in a central position is among other facilities provided by the society this year.

rhe president, Mr. A. 'l'. Carroll, bis committee, the secretary, Mr. A. 11. li. Unwin, and bis staff, were congratulated on all sides.

All visitors were loud in their praise for the way in which the Show was managed anil the way on which the organisation throughout the years laid built up a Show that was not only a credit to the town and district, but also excelled many other Shows in cer-

The society has in view an extensive programme of improvements, and all the money at its disposal will be put into the ground so as to make it one of the most up-to-date of its size in- the Dominion. With this end in view, a campaign has been commenced to raise funds, and the sports meeting to-morrow is a part of this programme. Yesterday’s gate takings were equal to last year’s total, and this is particularly pleasing to the society, which has increased its membership considerably, and a reduction in gate receipts would not have been surprising. The gate takings last year totalled £163, and while the accounts were not finalised last night interim returns indicate that the figure for yesterday will approximate this amount. Fifty new members were added since last Show. , , .

ain departments. Mrs. R. Buchanan, who judged the preserves, expressed her surprise at seeing such a display of preserves and cooking, and in these departments the exhibition was better than she had seen anywhere that she had adjudicated. The exhibits comprised really finished Show work, and the preserves ■uticularly put Palmerston North in the shade. She was completely taken by surprise to think that a small district like Wairoa could produce such a great display with so many entries.

Mr. P. J. Brewster, secretary of the Nuhaka A. and P. Society, was another who congratulated Wairoa on the excellent Show and the completeness of the organisation, which left nothing to .be desired.

The’day passed off without serious accident. A number of spills occurred in the horse competition events, but some of these are expected. None of the riders, however, suffered injury beyond a slight shaking and perhaps minor bruises. Officials controlling the. Show were: President, Mr. A. T. Carroll; vice-presi-dent, Mr. Humphrey Bavly; lion, treasurer, Mr. J. MacDonald; past presidents and life members,; Miss Anne Dickie; Messrs. T. Browne, M. P. Chapman, T. Davey, R. E. Jefferson, A. G. Nolan, 0. 0. Ormevod, E. 11. Glendining, (1. G. Gibson, W. J. Hill, Mason Chambers, G. 0. Ormond, E. L. Thomson, and 'l'. F. Walker; general committee, Messrs. J. Brownlie, A. C. deLautour, 11. Crichton, T. M. Connell, S. A. Dickie, 11. M. B. deLautour, I). 11. Evans, 0. Evans, M. Glynn, N. S. Hill, Hatn Ti Poki, E. V‘. M. Hut-

Judges' expressed pleasure with- the quality of the exhibits they were called upon to judge, and several noted marked improvements since they were at the Wairoa Show previously, particularly in the dairy cattle and the cage birds.

“2 Slcle shows' provided a wide variety “ of entertainment, and younger people were particularly interested in a .miniature railroad, which Wairoa and Gisborne folk hope will be a forerunner of a railway of a more substantial nature connecting the districts with the main system at an early date. Mercantile firms also had very pleasing displays on the ground, adding to the attractiveness of the ’."Show generally.

AN EARLY START

An early start was made with the judging, and the farmers’ and industrial exhibition was opened quiteearlv in the morning. Stock judges were necessarily slower in having their awards made known, but most had completed their duties by midday. Many Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay • »~«..-people were among the attendance, in-chid-iug-the. Mayor of Gisborne, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., and Mr. E. Cullen, M.P., Hawke’s Bay. I';22..l.;.Efisftient organisation was again a of the Show. All the offi- * ~’eials carried out their work in the most capable manner, and with it went the greatest courtesy competitors ■ and-judges could wish for. For this,

RECORD ATTENDANCE YESTERDAY Improved Display' of Station Stock IDEAL CONDITIONS PREVAIL FOR GATHERING Complete Arrangements Made by Association (Herald Special Reporter.) WAIROA, this day. A crowd of record proportions patronised the Thirty-eighth Annual Show held by the Wairoa Agricultural and Pastoral Society yesterday. The weather was ideal, and was a pleasant change from the cold and changeable conditions ruling recently.

Appointments on the ground have been improving each year, and a further forward move was made this year with minor alterations, while growlh on the willow trees round the sheep and pig pens, the dog hurdles and the dancing stage gave even better shade than in the past.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

bust draught horses

\V. Taylor, juu.; Southdowns, Mr. J. Maloney and Mr. Arthur Savage; fai and flock sheep, Mr. T. M. Connell and Mr. 11. M. B. deLautour, jun.; gift sheep, Mr. W. A. Crnror; pigs, Mr. A. Martin; dogs, Messrs. 11. B. Taylor and A. C. deLautour; fleece and wool, Messrs. M. G. M. Williams and R. S. Mackav; pigeons, Messrs. L. Robinson and 11. Corn forth; fruit., and vegetables, Mr. R. Steed; cooking, sewing, flowers, and school section, Mrs. J. W. B. Macdonald; dancing, Mr. J. D. Simpson; gate, Mr. J. W. B. Macdonald; measuring and -weighing, Mr. S. A. Dickie; marshal of parade, Mr. R. E. Jefferson.

The draught horses were the best the judge, Mr. D. D. Stewart, Sandy Greek, Hawke’s Bay, had soon in Wairoa for a long time, and he had been at the Wairoa Show on many occasions. He saw a big improvement since his last visit three yeais ago. The winning gelding and the champion stallion were, outstanding in their classes.

The thoroughbreds and competitions classes attracted a fine class of l.orse, which pleased the judge, Mr. J. Lyons, Hastings, who was impressed particularly with the work ovei tin- hurdles. He said that, the pony and hunters classes wore particularly pleasing.

CATTLE CLASSES Disappointment with tho Hereford classes was expressed by the judge, Mr. .1. Og.ilvy, Masterton, there being no uniformity in the stock shown. In some classes the entries were meagre, while many of the animals were in paddock condition. The outstanding bull in the Hereford section, he considered, was Messrs. Harris Bros.’ Alien Lucky Star, which was awarded first prize in the yearling class. The animal had a good head and good lines, low to the ground. Its hair was perhaps a trifle harsh to the feel. Mr. Ogilvy understood that yearling bulls were excluded from the Hereford championship, but if this had not been the case Messrs. Harris Bros.’ yearling undoubtedly would have received the title.

Mr. Ogilvey also judged the Aber-deen-Angus, classes and was of opinion that the quality on the whole was the best for any of the beef breeds at the Show. The two-year-old female champion had a nice head and confmmation. The first placed yearling hull was well set, near to the ground and more of the type wanted to-day. This section, too, contained little or no competition.

A pleasing display of aged and young cattle came before Mr. T. Itanford, Palmerston North, who said, however, that the intermediate ages were slightly disappointing from the point of view of udder conformation. The young cattle were very nice, were brought out in very good condition, and should grow into very nice- cattle. In the aged cow class, the judge had difficulty in separating the first two cows, the. winner securing the red ticket by very even conformation; both were splendid types of Jerseys. The champion, bull, an aged animal, was of splendid type and a good Show animal. Among the yearling heifers those which filled the first three places were very nice type heifers, the winner securing the verdict by a narrow margin through being generally of more even conformation SHEEP AND WOOL

Romney sheep provided a better display than last year, and the judge, Mr. A. Kirkpatrick, Gisborne, was pleased with what came before him. The number of entries, particularly, was a big improvement, and the quality had gone ahead considerably, too. The champion ram was; outstanding in his class, showing true characteristics of the breed, and the reserve champion ran the ribbon winner very close. The ewe champion was also a fine specimen, and had a fine pair of lambs, with the reserve champion not being very far behind. An attractive range ol' fleece wools was referred to by the judge, Mr. I. ,S. McLeod, Hastings. Commenting on the champion fleece award, which went to a hogget fleece, with a ewe fleece as reserve champion, he said that the reserve champion ewe fleece had more points than the champion hogget fleece. The ewe fleece was considerably the heavier. This brought about the higher points for the reserve champion as against the champion. In his opinion, there should he two separate championships for hogget and ewe wool. Manv of the exhibits had lost colour as a result of being hole! over from previous shows in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, and the display was hardly as [(leasing to the eye as all freshly shorn wool would have made, IMPORTED PIGS

Referring to the importations, made by the Pig Recording Club, the judge of the pig section, Mr. E. Wall, stated that the class of pigs the club had selected would make a good name for the Wairoa district, equal to any other district in Hawke’s Bay. In maintaining the standard it was necessary to keep to an English type. IMPROVED PIGEONS Although the display of pigeons was small, it was. an improvement on last year, and the judge, Mr. C. L. Fogden, Gisborne, was very pleased with the quality, which, he said, wag better than last yeaj;, Some of the fancies, fantails

and tumblers were well standard bred birds, making a good show. In the ptlier variety fancy class was a Modina which was very typical of the breed. The Hying homer classes were much better than last year, the winning bird in the blue chequer homer eock class being easily the best bird in the homer classes. The judge suggested that local fanciers should pay more attention to the condition of their birds. INDUSTRIAL SECTION

Such good competition came forward for the potato class in the vegetable section that it was decided to make two classes of the 25 entries, one for red and the other for white potatoes. The judge, Mr. J, Bretherton, Wairoa, commented that the potatoes displayed would make good entries for any Show. The- brown •Spanish onions were a splendid collection, and similar comment could be made on the first and second entries in the cabbage class. Another very good collection was. the display of runner beans, while an excellent exldbition was to be seen in the class for the best assortment of vegetables.

FLORAL EXHIBITS Although not too easy in some classes, it was a real pleasure to judge the floral exhibits, stated the judge, Mr. VV. li. vValker, Hastings. Almost without exception, the entries were up to flu- required standard. There was u total absence of overcrowding on the staging of inferior flowers. With only two exceptions, every class had some entries. A little more taste, perhaps, could he shown in the arrangement of the flowers in howls, while the posies and decorated baskets were evidence of a delightful sense of artistic ability in arrangement and blend of colour. There was plenty of room here for more entries. All the flowers, whether perennials, dahlias or gladioli, were wed grown and staged nicely. Special mention must be made of Mr. Bernard Teague’s exhibit not for competition of gladioli, all named. This stand was a decided acquisition, and helped in a large measure to make up for the few entries in these classes. With such an unrivalled climate, rich soil and unbounded possibilities, one would have liked lo see more entries. Mr. Walker suggested . that classes for fruit in baskets and pot plants, and classes for children, should be included in future shows. DOG SECTION

The dog section was quite up to the standard of those at other shows throughout the country, not altogether from the point of view of strength of competition, but from the quality standpoint. Some very fine dogs were paraded before the judge, Mr. ,). H. Lange, Hastings, who drew particular attention to the best dog in the Show, owned by Mr. Bunker, Hastings, He greatly appreciated the arrangements made by the A. and P. Society for the competitors, stewards and the judge, and the courtesy shown by members of the committee.
