SHOOTING OF OFFICER
TWO MEN CHARGED THE BROPHY CASE MELBOURNE, Jan. 8. Detectives laid informations at the city watchhouse this afternoon against two men who will be charged in the City Police Court, on Monday, with having, at Royal Park, oh May 22 1936, wounded Superintendent John O’Connell Brophy, chief officer of the Criminal Investigation Branch, wit intent to murder.
According to evidence given befpre a Royal Commission last year Superintendent Brophy went in a car to Royal Park to meet a police informer. While he was sitting in the car with the lights out, two masked men appeared near the car. Shots were exchanged, and Superintendent Brophy was wounded in the arm, chest, and neck. He was taken to hospital, and resumed duty a few weeks later.
