OPEN-AIR BOXING
CONTESTS IN SYDNEY ' BLAT.CH RETAINS TITLE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn. < SYDNEY, Jan. 19. A series of boxing) contests including the lightweight championship was conducted in the open air to-night, at the Sydney Sports Ground. Eight thousand spectators were present. In the main events, a stirring bout between the titleholcler, Alf Blatch, 9.7, and the contender for the lightweight championship, Joe Hall. 9.5. who is wellknown in New Zealand, the latter was knocked out in the eleventh round. Blatch thus retains the title. Hall revealed remarkable stamina and gameness and took considerable punishment. lie staged great rallies, but lacked the superior ringcraft of his opponent, who is now in the front rank of Australian boxers.
Herb Bishop, 10.1, defeated Terry Reilly, 9.13, the referee stopping the contest in the ninth round. This was an indifferent, fight. Bishop was always on top. In the final contest, Dick Humphreys, A 4. defeated Jimmy Purcell, 10.1. on points over 15 rounds.
