SAVED FROM PRISON
BY BABY AND.WOMAN EX-ARMY OFFICER CARDIFF, Nov. 2G. Tall, handsome Edward .lackman, Sii-year-old ex-public schoolboy and Army officer, was saved from prison hero to-day by a baby and a woman whose honour he had tried to shield. Jackman was fined ,C 25 for fraud and embezzlement, of money taken by him on behalf of the firm for whom he was a traveller. Sixteen other charges were taken into consideration, including: one for giving- false information to a registrar of births, marriages and deaths. Air. Elfyn David, defending, said .lackman belonged to a well-known West of Ungland family, was educated nt a famous English public school, had a brother who was a distinguished surgeon, and had himself been a. Territorial Army officer for seven or eight years. "Frankly," he said, "this man is a Cool, not a criminal." NO QUARREL. .Mr. David said __ Jackman was married some time ago but he and his wife did not get on together and parted without any quarrel or trouble. Jackman had since been friendly -with another young woman, by whom he had had a child, but rather than that the child should be branded as illegitimate Jackman gave wrong information lo the registrar. ■'l wonder," said Mr. David, "whether it would not have occurred to our own minds as to whether we should not have dope something like him to remove the stain. For the sake of the girl and the child I beg of you not to send him to prison." It was stated that Jackman was prepared to repay the money he had taken. Mr. W. Ft. Smith/ magistrate, said the plight of the woman with whom Jackman had been living had been taken into consideration. "We .arc sorry to find you ill this position." he said, "but we are giving you a chance in not. sending you to prison. Prove yourself a man and proud or the school from which you came."
