COOK COUNTY COUNCIL

THE MONTHLY MEETING The Cook County Council held its monthly meeting to-day, there being present Crs. Chas. Matthews, chairman, J. Tomblcson, F. S. Bowen, F. A. Shanks, E. 11, Baker, M. T. B. Hall, C. Tietjen, J. E. Benson and W, G. Slierratt. The Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone, wrote that he would investigate tho council’s request to establish a tree-planting reserve on Whakaongaonga 2G block, Mrs. L. Semmcns, Taumata station, asked for attention to the Ngatapa-Rero road, which was in a dangerous condition.—Tho member for the riding and tho engineer were instructed to investigate the matter, Messrs. Grant and Cooke, writing on behalf of Mr. R. O. Murphy, asked for dedication of a road at Wlmngara. The proposed road totalled 143 chains, and was from where the present formation letl tho old road to KiOVe to the fence of the Panikau woolshed paddock. Tho proposed road crossed the property of Mr. W. If. Williams, who had agreed j to dedicate the laud.—Cr. Sherrait said! that Mr. Murphy was asking for only one mile 40 chains of road. Some councillors expressed the fear that if this request was granted, the council might set up a dangerous precedent, and be deluged with similar applications. Tho county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, said that this was probably the outstanding case of its kind in the county, and be suggested that the council should view the locality so as to become acquainted with tho situation. On the chairman’s motion the council agreed to accept dedication on condition that there would bo no cost to the council for legalisation, construction, metalling, or fencing, and providing that Mr. Murphy was prepared to take steps necessary to close the present legalised road and purchase the land contained therein. Mr. W. S. Allan, Gisborne, wrote asking permission to cut, cocksfoot on Stevens’ road v off Panikau road.— The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, who was also deputed to deal with all other applications. The county ranger, Mr. E. A. Cameron, reported having seized 161 head of stock for impounding.
