CRASH IN BUSH

MISSING WEATHER PILOT CONDITION CRITICAL MELBOURNE, Dec. 1(5. Pilot Officer Eric Vernon Read, concerning whom grave fears were entertained when he failed to return on Monday from his daily flight to a height of 20,000 ft. to moke meteorological observations, was found yesterday badly injured in the bush al Mount, Wallace, about 50 miles from Melbourne, in the direction of Ballarat. His plane had crashed. It was located by searching planes from which it appeared that Pilot Officer Read was trapped in the wreckage. lie was seen to wave to the searchers. A pnrty of farmers proceeded to the scene, and it was found that Flying-Officer Read had suffered fractures of both legs and that his nose was' fractured, and all his teeth smashed. In addition he had severe facial injuries. He was trapped in the cockpit for 31 hours and suffered severely from thirst and mosquitoes. His condition is critical.
