, ASSOCIATION'S REPORT MEMBERSHIP DECREASE 192 FEWER PLAYERS “The executive committee has to report a reduction in the number of clubs affiliated from 16 to 14, and a reduction in the number of members from 777 to 595. The reductions are largely accounted for by the default of Te Araroa, Te Hapara and Tokomaru Bav club 9,” states the tenth annual report of the Poverty Bay and East Coast Lawn Tennis Association, to be presented at the annual meeting to-night. The membership of the clubs affiliated is set out in the report ns follows, the figures in parentheses being those lor the previous year: —Whataupoko, 10: (107): Gisborne, 68 (£0); Titirangi, 6o 7(76) : Wairoa, 63 f6O) ; Buatona, 51 f (50) • Marist, 50 (100); Tolaga Bay, 4\f47) / vVaipiro Bay, 32 (30); Mattgapapa, >5 (30); Patutahi, 22 <23); Te iyaraka, 20 (20); Whaugara, 20 '17); Hicks Bay, £0 ; Te Arai, 15 (10); Te Araroa, Hapara, “It will be noted.” continues the report, “that the Hicks Bay club has again affiliated. The position with ieard to the Tokomaru Bay club is most unsatisfactory, as uespite repeated at tempts, neither affiliation fees, nor i; formation as to membership have been forthcoming. COMPETITION HONOURS “The ninth annual championship and handicap tournament was held during the Christinas vacation in excellent wedthef. Satisfactory entries were received and the tournament was an all round success, resulting in a profit to the association of £l4 0s 4d. “The following players gained championship honoursLadies’ singles, Miss E. Eeed; boys singles, D," Richardson. “Miller Star Competition.—Star competition games were played regularly throughout the season, the stars changing hahd3 many times, the holders at the. close of the season being Messrs. Hampton and Katia. of the Titirangi club. Messrs. Kennedy and Chrisp are to be complimented on the manner in wh|ch they controlled the numerous games. “IT. B. Williams’ Shield—The shield competition was again uncompleted, largely through adverse weather conditions, the first round, the only round finished, resulted: Te Hapara (ree. 4) d. Marist (scr.), 17—7; Whataupoko (scr.) d. Mangapapa (rec. 8), 16—8; YVaipiro Bay (rec. 3) d. Tolaga Bay (scr.), on games; Titirangi (scr.) d. Wairoa (scr.), 14—10; Gisborne (scr.) d. Te Karaka-Patutahl (rec. 7), 13—11. “Primary Schools' Tournament.—This tournament is very popular with the school children and the association is doing valuable work in fostering the game amongst the younger players. The Primary Schools Teachers* Association is largely responsible for the actual running of the tournament, the association providing trophies and balls and arranging for courts. The following were successful : Girls' singles, Miss Nolene Thomson (Convent); boys’ singles, J. Graham (Marist) ; girls’ doubles, Misses Fisher and Nesbitt (Te Karaka); boys’ doubles. J. Kitfgi and L. Beattie (Ormond); mixed doubles, Miss N. Thomson and L. Scholium (Convent). VISIT OF HENRI CCCHET "During the past season, the association was fortunate in being able to secure a visit from the ex-singles champion of the world, Henri Cochet, who, together with Messrs. .1. and A. Willard and L. Baker, of Australia, played a series of matches on the Gisborne Lawn Tenni3 Club’s courts. Owing to wet weather, the games had to be. played on Tuesday afternoon in lieu of Saturday, this, of course, having an adverse effect on the attendance, but the association had insured against rain, it was able to show a small profit as a result of the Visit. The visitors gave a wonderful exhibition and the visit was a pronounced success.” Thanks were expressed to all who had helped the association. The statement of income and expenditure showed that the association had concluded the year's operations with a credit balance of €8 )2s £(d. The receipts from the tournament amounted to £74 8s 2cl and after paying off all expenses there was a profit of £l4.
