GROWTH IN MEMBERSHIP REPORTS TO ASSEMBLY (For Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The'Union sermon was delivored by the fcev. 0. B. Boggi.9, of Hastings, at ,l,e sitting of the fifty-fourth annual ■awmfflv of the Baptist Union of New Zealand' and the Now Zealand Baptist Missionary Society yesterday. In His annual report, the secretary, the Rev. M. W. P. Lascolles, said that the most notable event of the year had been the opening of a new church at Grevmbtith. There had been marked ■nrogress in the erection of new buildings and extensions to existing ones in all-parts of the country. 'I ho tola membership of the churches comprised in the- union was 9023. and increase of 16». in the year. Self'denial and thanksgiving offer* ings had amounted to £2145, of which the union had receive,! £714; the remainder being donated to the jnwsionary society. The sum ot -iluOJ had been contributed to the new cause at Cirevmouth, where the membership had reached 33. Many pastorates wore.:-now hold by Baptist College trainees. New problems are confronting Christ s church, but in the gospel of Jesus Christ and live Kingdom of God we have a programme, and resources vast enough for onr utmost needs." Congratulations were extended to the Bev. C. B. Busfield on the con- • tinned success of the fire insurance fund, which was showing .a good profit. 'Mr." Busfield inaugurated the - scheme seven years ago. According to the financial statement, the total amount, of . cash passing through the union office during the year.was £20,390. A statement for the union showed a deficit of £4S7, while"that of the missionary society showed a deficit of £B6B. . A prolonged discussion followed a finance committee remit that only two major'appeals be made throughout the year, instead of three as at ■ present. This was adopted, it being.agreed that the question of allocation be deferred to the'union council. ":„ ■ '.'..
