VALEDICTORY

MR. ARTHUR F. ALLEN HARBOUR STAFF FAREWELL

At the Gisborue Harbour Board's offices this morning a gathering of staff members took place in connect ion -with the severance of .Mr. Arthur F. Allen's association with the board. .Mr. Allen, who has received an appointment with the. Public Works Department as" an engineering assistant, has been on the staff of the board for the past 10 years, and during the greater part of that time has acted in an advisory capacity un engineering matters connected with the harbour.

The secretary of the board, Mn.H. A. Barton, assured Mr. Allen that though it was not possible to gather all the employees together at the one time, everybody in the employment, of the board had associated himself or herself with the function. All who had worked with Mr. Allen were sorry to see him go, but they realised that lie had an opportunity of bettering his position, and wished him well for his future. They considered that his capability and his attention to the detail of his work, together with his agreeable personality, would ensure his rapid progress in bis new sphere. Mr. Barton added that the departing officer had been of great assistance to him in his work, and thai- bis grasp >,i the engineering side of the board's opr-va-tions was comprehensive and always available; he had been specially valuable during the past, four years, during which he had been the only source of information available on harbour works and engineering matters generally. His workin connection with 'the conversion ol the steel hopper barge into a maintenance dredge had been particularly successful, and had given a good indication of the manner in which he could take charge of work independently, and carry it through to success. Messrs. 11. K. BalcTrey and E. Woodrow also addressed congratulatory remarks, to Mr. Allen, who was presented with a travelling rug and other smaller gifts in token of his popularity with the staff. In acknowledging the gifts, Mr. .Allen declared that- he owed n great deal to the kindly assistance and cooperation he had always received in his work, and that he would look back on his association with the staff with pleasant recollections.
