EAST COAST DISTRICT REPORT OF ASSOCIATION FINANCES IMPROVED An improvement in the finances of the assoi iation, and also in the attendance of iiic public at regatta Jjxtiu'es held during tin? pasl joar, is noted in the annual report, of the Past Coast Rowing Association, prepared tor submission at. the forthcoming annual meeting. The report congratulates the clubs on another successful year, and upon the. fart, that the district membership of rowing clubs has shown another increase.
The. comparison between tin's, years nnd last years membership figures is presented Ihus: Poverty Bay club, 40 members in 1954-35, 45 in. 1935-36; Gisborne club, 64 and 71; Wairoii club. 65 and 44; Napier club, 57 and 25. The figures are based on financial membership in the respective clubs, the total for the year being 185, as against 176 For I he previous year. Tfc is staled that- the credit balance now amounts to £2l, ay against £l4 at the beginning of the year, these figures indicating that the association has m part recovered from the financial outlay in connection with housing the eight-oar boat.
The report reviews the results of regatta, racing for the various shields as under:—- L.V.A. Four-Oar Shield: Napier, 7 points; Gisborae, 4J>- points. Harris and. Hill Pair-Oar Shield: Napier, 7£ points; Poverty Bay, 4 points. Colley And Kirk Doubles. Shield: Poverty Bay, 9i points; "vVairoa, 2 points. Neill .Singles Shield: Poverty Bay, 1\ points; Gisborne, 4£ points. The occasion of the L.V.A. Shield regatta at, Farndon Park, Hawke's Bay, was especially significant this year as it coincided with the. diamond jubilee of the Napier .flowing Club, to which club the executive extends its. congratulations upon achieving the jubilee anniversary, and upon its successes in the regatta. The report records the thanks of (he association to Mr. Alex Boss for representing the association on the New Zealand Bowing Council, and to Mr. Michie, for his report on the last annual conference, of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, which he attended ns a. delegate of the East Coast body. THE EIGHT-OARED BOAT With reference, to the use, of the eightoared boat, presented to the association two years ago, it is mentioned that the boat is now in need of attention to the interior fittings, more particularly tho steel stays and other portions which are subject to deterioration through exposure to salt water. The report also indicates that while no official report was received from tho Napier club regarding its entry in the interprovincial eights, rowed at Wanganui. during the year, the Napier crew was understood to have lost all chance through mishaps in the early part of the race. Warm thanks are expressed to the public for its sustained interest in the sport of rowing, and to the affiliated clubs for the. manner in which the. sport has been managed and good relations maintained throughout the year.
