VETERANS’ ALLOWANCE

EFFECT OF (SUSTENANCE QUESTION TO MINISTER (Tor Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Inst; night. In n question in the House of Keprosentatives, the Jiev. A. 11. Nordmoyer (Lab. Oamarn) asked the Minister of Defence whether he "was aware that when a man is in receipt of a war veteran's allowance, and also of sustenance, it is the custom to regard sustenance as income, and to reduce the allowance accordingly, and whether he will arrange that; the war veterans’ allowance remain fixed, any necessary adjustment boingi made in sustenance.

The Hon. F. .Tones replied that Sect ion fi of the War Veterans' Allowances Act, .l!).'!d, allows a single or widowed veteran to receive an income of £2G per annum, and a married veteran £2O per annum before any reduction is made in the maximum Avar veteran’s allowance. Provided the sustenance rates are adjusted so that a veteran’s income does not exceed these amounts, there is nothing to prevent the payment of the maximum allowance, but it. is not; possible to assess a veteran’s allowance at the maximum rate before tho sustenance rate is adjusted.
