Mr. Ivan Alan Presland has left Gisborne to join the staff of the Railway Department in Palmerston North. Dr. N. Reay Mackay, lately of Te Puia, has arrived in Wellington to take up his residence there. In the Legislative Council yesterday 14 davs' leave of absence was granted to Sir Ilea ton Rhodes on account of illness. Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., is visiting Wairoa to-day to conduct the monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court there.
Mr. F. Aidd, formerly of Te Karaka, who has been postmaster at Huntly for the past live years, has received notice of his transfer to Otahuhu. He will leave to take up his new duties in about two weeks.
Mr. A. C. A. Sexton (Ind., Franklin) was granted four days' leave of absence in the House of Representatives yesterday on account of illness. Mr. W. A. bodkin (Nat., C. Otago) and Mr. J. Jlargest (Nat., Awarua) were each granted two days' leave on account of urgent public business.
According to advice received this week by his relatives in Gisborne, Mr. E. R. Scurfe, formerly of this district, is now on the tourist cruise staff of the CunardWhite Star liner Berengaria, 54,000 tons, which has been cruising in the Caribbean Sea. Mr. Scarfe had a few trips previously on the Queeil Mary, having been transferred to that vessel from a Baltic cruise ship.
A very large gathering of Maoris and pakehas attended a farewell social and dance at Pakipaki, Hawke's Bay, tendered to Miss A. M. Blackett, who has been on the staff of the Pakipaki School as infant mistress for the past eight years, and who is leaving to take up a similar position at Waipiro Bay. The Moungarca Hall was prettily decorated, while set out on a table were presents from the Pakipaki School Committee, staff and parents, and several others from old pupils. Mr. Brooker, chairman of the committee, and Messrs. Puhara, McKay and Jolley all spoke eulogistically of Miss Blackett, Mr. Brooker presenting to her the beautiful presents.
