VILLAGERS ESCAPE
100,000-TON LANDSLIDE GENEVA, Aug. I<>. The hamlet of Silenen, in the Canton of I'll, had a remarkable escape early this morning when 100,000 tons of the mountainside, thundered down into the valley, missing the village by yard.*. Late last night the chief forester of the canton discovered that n big section of the mountainside had become detached. He warned Hie inhabitants, and in their uightclothos, driving their animals before them, the peasants set out in the darkness in search of safety. At. 2.1 f) a.m. there was a. big rock fall, and two hours later Mic greater part of the side of the mountain —the Kleinc Wimlgalle—crashed into the valley. The, torrent of stone and earth was arrested within a few yards of the. village, hut some of (he slonos and mud foil into the-streets.
More of Ihe mountain is expected to fall to-night. The villagers linve not, therefore, re-turned io their homes.
