AGRICULTURAL CHINA

1 PEOPLE LIVE IN MUD HUTS APPALLING CONDITIONS In a journey from Shanghai to Pekin during their tour of the Fast. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Young, Whakatane, travelled by the famous express which takes 45 hours to complete the journey. In all that journey through mostly level country they saw practically no stock whatever. For mile after mile they travelled through rice fields where men, women and children were planting from dawn til! dark. Each plant was put in separately like an onion so the infinite amount of labour can he imagined. There were no fences to the small fields, which were apparently marked off by stones at the corner. The living conditions of the farmers were appalling. They lived in little mud hunts in compounds for protection against thieves. "The Maori wharcs here." said Mr. Younm, "are perfect, palaces compared with '"the homes of the poorer class in China."
