CARGO GANTRY
BLUFF DEMONSTR ATION
An intricate sot of rails, several miniature* railway trucks and a h u 'K e tinus'iial piece of machinery called a gantry were the" chief pieces used by the engineer of the Bluff Harbour-Board, Mr. D. E. S. Mason, in demonstrating to the board members a method to expedite the loading and discharging of vessels at the port. The gantry is n movable one, and will, it is claimed, eliminate, the risk to life which is present now, especially at night, when the wharf is crowded with trucks and there is a confusion of noises. With the new gantry the efficiency of the port would improve immensely and although that very efficiency would decrease the levenue of the Blulf Harbour Board, in that ships would obtain their clearances earlier, members of the board considered that the reputation of the 'port would be enhanced thereby. Later, at the board meeting, it was decided to approach the Railway Department and obtain its opinion on the practicability of the proposed scheme and ask to what extent it was prepared lo give financial assistance.
