DASH FROM SHIP

SEAMAN’S ESCAPADE

DEPART LIRE DELAYED

SYDNEY, Sept. 17.

The reluctance of an American seaman to leave Sydney resulted. in the departure of the motor ship Jeff Davis, more than two hours last night. The hawsers had been cast oil the 'boll, aids, and the gangway was being slowly raised, when the seaman rushed down the gangway and jumped onto the wharf. Do disappeared into one of the alleyways that abound near the Woollooniooloo wharves.

Immediately the remainder of the crew realised that their companion did not intend to return they decided that they would not put to sea until lie had been located. The hawsers were placed hack on the bollards, amt the seamen gathered m small groups on the deck discussing the situation. Meanwhile the agents for the ship had been notified, and an intensive man-hunt through local restaurants and dance halls commenced. The search proved futile, and the water police were asked to co-operate in searching other haunts usually frequented by visiting seamen. The man was ultimately located in a restaurant in the city. Ife was bundled into a taxi-cab and hurried back to his ship, where he was greeted effusively by his waiting friends, who then raised no objection to the vessel’s departure.
