FIRST RUGBY CLUB

CHRISTCHURCH CLAIM RIVAL TO NELSON (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON; this day. The statement made in a recent letter to the New Zealand Rugby Union by Mr. K. C. Tennent, of Woodvilhg concerning the formation of the first Rugby football club in the Dominion, is challenged by a newspaper correspondent who says: “ Mv. Tennent, is wrong in saying that the club he assisted to form in Nelson m 18(58 was the first football club m New Zealand. “The Christchurch Football Club was formed in ISGG. This club lost the records ,of the first four years, so dates its career from 1807 when the existing records began.” The correspondent adds thfit. confirmation is to be found in old newspaper files of the sixties. Actually football was played in Christchurch and Lyttelton in 1862, and rules for the game were drawn up at Christ s College in that year.”
