RUATORIA NEWS

SCOUT DANCE (Herald Correspondent.) Last Wednesday night a very jolly dance was held jn the Gaiety Theatre, Euntorin, in aid of the recently-formed Boy Scout Club. Unfortunately, .the weather was most unfavourable and prevented the attendance of many people who had to cross rivers or traverse unmetalled roads. The stage was artistically decorated with large 'bowls of daffodils, whilst on the supper tables were irises and yellow jasmine. The music was supplied t>v the Night Owl orchestra, and much appreciated extras were played by Misses E. Pierce and ,K. Beale. Mr. Little capably carried out the duties of M.C.

Mr. J. Tamahori’s singing was very popular. Two dance .competitions, a Monte Carlo waltz and spot dance, were won by Mr. 11. Chiplin and Miss E. Neels.

During the evening Dr. W. A. Bowie, who came up from Gisborne for the occasion, gave a most interesting talk on I lie good work of the Boy Remit, movement.. Mr. A. J. IT. Kirkhnm apologised for several who were unable to attend and introduced Dr. Bowie, the East Coast commissioner. Dr. Bowio said tho Boy Scout movement started after Hie Boer War and had done a tremendous amount of good teaching the boys to he men as men should be —honest, brave, fair, unselfish and cheerful. The speaker gave many interesting facts about tho movement and what had been done in oilier countries as well hs New Zealand. Dr. Bowie was followed by Mr. Les W. Anderson, ’tho general secretary of tho Y.M.C.A. in Gisborne. Mr. Anderson said ho was pleased at the progress made by tho Scout movement in Ruatoria in such a short time.

Hickey, I. Srnvtli, V. Baker, D. Ilaenga, Bickford, T. McKinnon, TTogan, and ITills.

Mr. and Mrs. E, A. Fraser have returned to the. Coast after spending a week at Pounwa as the guests of Mrs. T. Fraser.-—Mr. and Mrs. Mander, Gisborne have been the guests of the Rev. A. .11. Jl. and Mrs. .Morris, Waipiro Bay.— Misses M. Williams and E. Reed. Bay of Islands, have been, the guests of Mrs. O. T, Williams. Runtoria.
