POLICE RAID SALOON TEN MEN .ARRESTED (Herald Correspondent.) As a result of a raid made by Sergeant. D. Clark, and three constables on Saturday afternoon on a billiard saloon in Wairoa. 10 men were arrested for having allegedly engaged in a game ol twoup. and they are to appear before Mr. E, L. Walton. SAL. tomorrow. Among those c-barged were eight Maoris and two Europeans. Soon after their arrest, the accused appeared before Mr. J. R. Gillespie, J.P.. and were remanded, each being allowed out on bail on his own recognaisance of £5.
Summer-time was ushered in on Sunday for 1936-37. with perhaps move_ than the usual lapses on the part of Wairoa householders, for one party of Maoris put the clocks back instead of forward, lining doubly late for their engagements.
The members of the play-reading circle of the Wairoa Women’s Institute inet at the residence of Mrs. F. H. Jones, Clyde road, where a very successful gathering was held. Three plays were read, “in Our Dreams.” “Hunt the Tiger,” and “The Wonderful Tourist, the parts being taken by Mesdames Glass, Hevwood, Boss and Highett, and Misses Hiuckesman, 'Williamson, Buchanan. Good, Coleman, Cam, Edser and Ivcnnv.
Very useful warm rain fell practically all over the Wairoa district on Sunday night and yesterday .morning, recommencing again last- evening. It- will greatly benefit the pastures. September may just miss scoring a dry record for that month.
Mr. Foster Crane, an ex'-Wniroa lwy, recently trained at the Auckland Bible Training Institute, is visiting Wniroa, and leaves during the week for Taranaki. —The Government apiary instructor. Mr. Rnstcrer, paid a. visit of inspection to Wniroa last week.—Mr. and Mrs. \\\ Drysdale, have left on a. motor tour of the East Coast. —Mr. N. Butcher, clerk of the court in Wniroa, who takes up an important post in the. Crown law office, leaves this week for Wellington. His successor, Mr. A. IT. Gilison, arrived on Sunday to take up his duties.—Mr. Ernie Crane, who has been; teaching in Christchurch, is being transferred to Samoa. —Mr. and Mrs. Malaghany Wellington, are visiting Morere. Miss Esmo Sweetman, who is soon to leave Wniroa. to reside in Christchurch, on Sunday was the subject of a presentation from the choir, the A.I. and ‘C. and the parishioners of St. Peter's Church. Mr. F. A. Lowe, wlio was recently elected president of the Wniroa Bowlpng Club, has resigned that post owing to pressure of ins official duties. The position will he tilled to-morrow. —Mr. J. M.' Osier, who has Iveen on an extended visit, to Scotland, returned -to Wairoa an Saturday.—Mr. G. llunlop, Government veterinarian, who is wellknown to Wairoa people, is relieving at the works of Messrs.-’Swifts (N.Z.), Limited. Mr. Dunlop, it will be remembered, was a successful dog exhibitor at Wairoa A. and P. Shows.—Dr. Shore, tuberculosis adviser of hospital boards, is to visit Wairoa in November.—Mr. 11, Spronl, Auckland, is visiting, bis son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. Sproul, King street.
