WEST COAST TRAGEDY

TUCKER FLA’f) TUNNEL , * | EXPLOSION OF DYNAMITE | {Per Press Association.) ! HOKITIKA, last night. | Further particulars of the tragedy in the Tucker Flat tunnel works this morning show that the deceased, Robert Thompson Gallon, aged 30, married, with two children, was engaged in the tunnel, and started on the shift at midnight, with a mate. After crib, at 5 a.m., the latter enter- j ed the tunnel, expecting Mr. Gallon to follow in a quarter of am hour. Instead, he heard an explosion that shook the tunnel and found the crib tent, which-contained 121 b. uX -dymi—mite and a dozen detonators, demolished, tram rails broken and the earth torn, and the body of the deceased terribly mutilated. Mr. Gallon's mate cannot account for the explosion, as the usual course followed was not to prepare the charge until 7.30 a.m., shortly before the end of the shift, when a special visit to the tent was made to bring the explosives. Air. Gallon was an exceedingly careful man in this regard. The inquest was opened and adjourned. I
