HOCKEY FINISHED

WIN FOR NAPIER LADIES KIA TOA BEATEN 3—2 The last hockey match of tin' season in Oisborne was played on the C'hilclcrs Road Reserve on Saturday afternoon between the Napier Ladies' Hockey Cluli and an eleven representing Hie two Kia Ton teams in the Oisborne sub-association 's competition.

Napier was the belter side, and won by three goals to two. It was strong and particularly well balanced Tor a club ream, and although'the Kia Toa eleven contained eighl players who had seemed Poverty Bay representative honours, the visitors displayed superior combination and understand-

The Napier team gave an impressive display, the forwards and halves placing the ball verv well indeed, but the Kia Toa fullbacks, Mrs, Watts and .Miss Allen, were at the top of their form, and sent the Napier forwards back time after time. The Kia Toa pair, used speculation methods, and their tactics succeeded almost every time. "Miss Ramngc was playing a splendid half game, stopping soundly and clearing well. Mrs. Niepl and .Miss Bell were Ihe best of the home forwards, working very well together. The Oisborne forwards were practically a representative combination, bul the strong defence of the Napier team kept them very quiet, and they were not nearly so impressive as the Napier vanguard. Mrs. Algie, an ex-Poverty' Bay representative, was hardly up to her old Oisborne form, but was still one of the best backs on the field. Napier played three fullbacks and no goalkeeper. The Napier halves also were strong, with .Miss 1). Clark, left, best, varying her plav well with cross hits to the right wing in an endeavour 10 catch the opposing defence out oi' position. Miss Campbell, centre, was also a good half, though prone to giving stick-;, which was a failing with most of the Napier players. The' visiting forwards combined exceptionally well, showing good understanding, .Misses M. Clark, centre, and Mortensen, inner left, being the most prominent.

There was no score until near the end of the first spell, when the splendid combination of the Napier team told its tale. Mrs. Nimonson took the ball down the right Wing, and centred for Miss .M. Clark to goal. The Kia Toa forwards wore dangerous on occasions when they broke away, and when '.Miss Bell went through the Napier defence she passed to .Mrs. Nk'ol, who scored, making the score one till. Half-time came immediatelv after.

The second spell was nol far advanced before Napier scored again. Mrs. Simonson sent a long pass across to Miss Mortensen, who look the ball into the circle, Miss Downey coming in from Lite left wing to scorn. K.ia Ton equalised again before very long, al'ter their forwards showed better combination, particularly between Mosdanies Xicol and Sang'woll and Mis* 8011. Mrs. Nieol raced through from midfiold, and when on the circle edge centred for Miss Bell to put the finishing touches to the movement. Xapier got in front once more when the forwards swept down/iold, Mrs. Simonson centering for Miss M. Clark to shoot: Miss Patty stopped the shoi on hoi pads, lint .Miss Mortenson, following in, snicked the ball into the goal. There was no further score, and the ganio ended: Xapier .'■!, Kia Toa 2. Tho umpires were Messrs. G. Graham and FT. Swan.
