RADIO TELEPHONY

POPULAR ON TASMAN (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The new opportunity for radio communication between New Zealand telephone subscribers and passengers in the intercolonial liner Awatea has been a popular innovation, the total number of calls rhiring the liner's first round trip between New Zealand and Australia being 67. On the outward trip from Wellington to Sydney, via Auckland,, there were 42 calls, and on the return journey from Sydney to Auckland 25 conversations took place, of which 20' originated from, the Awatea. and five from New Zealand subscribers. In every ease the reception was reported to be excellent. A great deal of interest was taken in this, interesting development of telephony and the Awatea'a radio operators would have been extremely busy on the liner last evening before reaching port but for the fact that heavy southerly weather was encountered on rounding Cape Maria Van Diemcn, and the activity of many passengers was thus considerably curtailed.
