FOUR INJURED

WEEK-END ACCIDENTS

CAR AND CYCLE COLLIDE

TWO MEN STRUCK DOWN

Two motor accidents, both fortunately unattended by serious consequences, occurred in the Gisborne district on Saturday evening, four people Wing injured to some, extent.

The first mishap occurred at Manutuke, two men' being struck down by a motor car. In the other case, a car and a motor-cycle, the latter carrying a pillion passenger, came into collision at the intersection of Aberdeen and Roebuck roads, the rider and passenger being thrown from the motor-cycle and the first-mentioned being admitted to hospital.

The injured men in the Manutuke mishap were Thomas Corby, aged 35, and Thomas Hickey, aged 36, both railway workers employed at Tomes' camp. They were walking homeward near Manutuke settlement when they were overtaken by the car, the driver of which failed .to .observe .them until too late. to avert the accident.. The car was. .driven by 0. P. Jacobs, who is employed on the Pyke estate, Waingake, and who reported' to the police that just prior to the mishap he had seen a car ahead slow up and then proceed. Within a few minutes Mr. Jacobs saw two men immediately in front of the car, apparently trying to signal him to pull up. The margin was too small to permit of his complying with the signals, and the men were unable to clear the road in time to avoid a collision. A doctor was called to attend the men, one of whom suffered head injuries. Both -Messrs. Corby and Hickey were conveyed to the Cook Hospital in the St. John Ambulance, and it was reported yesterday that both were making good progress, neither having been injured seriously. To-day's report also was satisfactory. The collision between the car and motor-cycle which took place in town added to the long list of accidents which have occurred at the intersection oi Roebuck and Aberdeen roads. Neither L. R. Morris, aged 20, the rider of the cycle, nor Mrs. Ward Poeock, driver of the car, saw the other vehicle in time to avert a collision, and Mr, Norm, with his passenger, Miss Rene McLachlan, were thrown off their machine, happily without serious consequences. Mr. Morris was taken to the Cook Hospital after receiving medical attention, his condition to-day l>eing described as satisfactory. He 'is a resident of Bright street, while Miss McLachlan, lives in Hansen road, Mangapapa. The young lady escaped with bruising and a severe shock, and was able to proceed to her home after the accident.

At the time of this accident, the motor-cvele was approaching Roebuck road bridge by way of Roebuck road, and Mrs. Poeock's car was turning out of Aberdeen road on to the bridge approach. _____^___
