ORDERS FOR MACHINERY
BUILDINGS TO BE STARTED
An inspection of the Whakatane Paper Mills Limit eel's tramline from Awakeri to the mill site at Whakatane, was carried out on Thursday by the company's engineer, Mr. 11. J\ Worley. In conversation with a Bay of Plenty Press reporter, Mr. Worley stated that the preparatory work in connection with the establishment of the pulp and paper mills was being advanced without/ delay. Mr. 11. A. rlorroeks, managingdirector, had placed orders for all the machinery required for the mill, and was on his way back from America, lie was expected' to reach Auckland oil October 25. Mr. Horrocks had cabled the Fletcher Construction Company,, the successful tenderers for the erection, ot the mill building, requesting them to be prepared to commence work in November. It could be expected that tin; mill would be completed and! commence operations in: 12 to 14 months from this date.
Referring to the railway line construction that had been carried out by the contractors, Messrs Butler and Carroll, Mr. Worley said that the work had been executed in an excellent manner. The line was designed according to the Railway Department's specifications for railway construction. The company's line cost £4COO per mile, as compared with the cost, of £20,000 to £23,0C0 per mile for the East Coast line.
Mr. Worley concluded by saying that ho considered there was no reason for any further delay in the establishment of'the industry,'which would give employment to a large number of workmen and be a great advantage to the country.
