PORT AUTHORITY MEETS AWAPTJNI LAO DON SOtfßfflCE BEAUTIFIOATION .WORK

The list of business awaiting attention by members oi' the Gisborno Harbour Board at, their monthly meeting to-day was longer than has been usual in recent months, several items of correspondence being received in addition to the reports and statistics relating to (he control oi the port. The, Waiapn County Council advised that, it was "unable to comply with (he request of the Gishorne Harbour Hoard with regard to road access to the board's endowment lands in the Tauwhareparac .block.—The Idler was received. The. Gisborno. Uornngh Council wrote inviting the board lo send representatives to a conference to be held on Monday, October 19, to discuss the general' beaut ideation of the Poor Memorial area, at Kaiti.— Messrs. A. .1. Nicol and C. 11. Williams were appointed to attend the conference on behalf ol the. board.

The Gisborno Beautifying Association wrote proposing an extension of the beautifying work on the town bank ol the Turanganui River, below the railway bridge.—This matter was deferred until the. "board received the report of the works committee.

Messrs. T. Corson and I. J. Quigley were nominated as foundation members of the Gisborno Thirty Thousand Club, in response to a request for support from, that body.

The .Marine Department advised that its general proposals with relation to the transfer of the title hi the Awapuni lagoon to the board, for endowment purposes, could not be entertained, by the Government. —The chairman remarked that the letter closed the matter, the letter being formally received. \vOli FCS ( '•Oil M ITTE K'S R EPORT.

The, works committee's report was as under:

"Air compressor for Dredge A.C — Two .offers to supply air compressor plant to operate the oil lire burners in getting up steam on the boilers of the dredge A.C, to supersede the present hand operation wore discussed with Mr. A. F. Allen. One offer was for a Broome and Wade electric driven rotary compressor at £lO5, and the other offer at £6O was for a Tilghman's reciprocating single acting compressor without, a motor. In view of advafages explained by Mr. Allen, the committee decided to recommend the board to install a compressor of the type offered at £]o"j, complete with m,otor. This does not include cost of installation and wiring connection.

"Painting No. 4 shed.—As directed by the board the committee considered the suggestion that Xn. 4 cargo shed be painted. The board is recommended to arrange that this be done. "Bead's Quay wharf.—With reference to the letter received from, the Beautifying! Association suggesting that Bead's quay wharf below the lailwav bridge be brought into conformity with the improved area above the bridge, the committee recommends that a comprehensive report be obtained from the works foreman.

"Signal station sewer connection.— The committee considered plans and estimates prepared by Mr. A. F. Allen for sewerage, connection to the signal station. The board is recommended to apply lo the borough council for permission to proceed. The cost, is estimated at £6G. A small septic tattle is included in the proposed installation. . , . "Preparations ro Centennial celebrations.—The committee inspected Ihe board 's yard near the Cook Memorial, and gave directions that a general clean-up be proceeded, with, as opportunity occurs, and bo carried out in a manner to improve the outlook from the Cook Memorial site, in which locality functions in connection with tlio centennial celebrations are proposed to be held." The secretary-manager, Mr. 11. A. Barlon. submitted bis report as under:— -Dredging. -During the lour weeks emletl September 22. the dredge A.C. nn,«lnnd deposited 28 loads ol sand and ,„ucl from the entrance channel. In 59 hours- dredging time and 28 hours dumping time, 8760 tons ol sand and IECO tons of mud. a total of- 10,200 tons were, lifted and transported to the (lim ,,,ing ground in the bay. Six days dredging tune was lost-during the period, owing to rough weather. An unexpectedly low tide on September 22 produecd 'insufficient depth nt water to make it- possible to slip the dredge. It is proposed to make another attempt on September 29. "Slipway.—The. Oisborne Lightering Company's lighter llaku was taken up on the'main slipway on September 7. and was unslipped on September 9. The company's f»B Ki Pi w;,s laken "P °," September 14 arid came off on the lotlowing day. The tug Karoro was taken up on September 15 and came off Oil September 18. Its launch Tikirau was taken up on to the small slip on September 18 and came oil" on September 21. The fishing launch White Heather was taken up on that- day and came off on the following day. when the fishing launch Amai was taken up. '•('ash Statements and 'trade Returns.

—The returns show that during August, 3761 lons of -cargo passed inward over the wharves, as compared with 4211 tons for the sam-e month last- year, and 2599 tons went outward, compared with 3674 tons during August last year. The re. turn covering 11 months to the end of August shows 45.428 tons inward, against 42,203 tons for the same period last year, and 34,008 tons outward, against 36.391 tons last, year. This, shows aii increase of 3225 tons of imports, and a decrease of 2283 tons of exports. The cash statement- figures for the 11 months ended August. 1936, compared with the previous year's figures under main headings show as follows : ■ Receipts,—Ship charges, .1,1 months to August 31, 1936. £6182, 11 months to August 31, 1935, £7081; wharfage,

£14.841. £14.714; harbour improvement rale. £5481, £5539; rent. £5498. £5879: rales, £34,507, £33,217; launch hire, £487). £380: sale of plant, etc., £46, £715: side of land and buildings. £2OO, £68,642, £69.293. This shows a decrease of £651.

"Expenditure, ordinary.— Intei'csf. sinking fund and bank charges, 11 months to Augtisl 31. 1936. £58,969, 11 months to August 31. 1935. £59,118; new plant, buildings, etc.. £664, £124: Sacral expenditure; £12.053. £12,017: totals. £71,686, £71.259. This shows an increase of £427.

"11l addition to the above. £4306 IBs Id, to be met out of ihr reserve fund. was expended during the 11 months ended August, 1936."
