DROUGHT OF WHISKY
NEW ZEALAND'S PLIGHT SHIPMENTS REFUSED OBJECTIONS TO EXCHANGE (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHUROH, this day. It is only a matter of months before supplies of hulk whisky in Now Zealand will be exhausted. Scottish firms have declined to send further shipments to New Zealand owing to the markets in America being easier of access and free from the exchange difficulty which has been a source of annoyance. The big Scottish firms have been in the habit of carrying adverse .exchange themselves. The .Scottish manufacturers had continued to supply the New Zealand market with bulk whiskey and pay the exchange themselves 'in the hope of the Labour Government lowering Itho exchange rate, said an import er, but their patience was now exhausted. Although they were supplying case whiskey at a loss, the market was too valuable to lose, and the}' were hanging on in the hope of the exchange being removed, or at least reduced to a more favourable level. Bulk whiskey had, until lately, been available, but at an exorbitant price. The price had increased by 150 per cent. Even then there had .'•been difficulties iii getting supplies. Now came the latest advice from Scotland that no more bulk whiskey would be sent to New Zealand. The demand this year in America was confidently expected to increase by 100 per cent. Thus manufacturers were in a position to dictate their terms.
