Fossilised skeletons of fish have been found at various times by the men engaged in the removal of the papa rock above the short tunnel just south of Mercer station, on the Main Trunk railway, which is being replaced by a cutting. Frequent deposits of pipi shells have given further evidence that the rock was once part of the sea bed. A few days ago, at a depth of 105 ft., workmen found an excellently-preserved fossil of a flounder. Fabrics for summer frocks show a wonderful diversity of weave and colour, and Petties' are featuring a very comprehensive assortment of the most popular styles. Chief in ' importance are the linen weaves, which include plain finishes, slubs, linen tweeds, and silk linens. These are all fast colours, and the variety of shades is biKßer than ever.*
