COAST HIGHWAY
GREASY CONDITION HEAVY FALL OF RAL\ T "Heavy ram on Wednesday and Thursday made the road surface very greasy," said the, resident A.A. patrol, \lr. D. McGregor, who returned this morning after a tour of inspection) of the Coast main highway. He said that most of the moisture was absorbed by_ the country after the extremely dlry winter and on this account the water-coarses beyond Tokomaru Bay did not rise to any considerable extent. The crossing in the vicinity, of the Ngatiporou Dairy Company's factory in Ruatoria was flowing to a depth of 15in. yesterday, this being the first occasion for some time that there had Ibeen any water in the stream. It is many) years since the season has been so dry. At Pouawa, near Read's bridge, the •;ontractor ha* completed work m preparation for easing the corner, and the mile and a-holf section of road" is now being allowed to consolidate prior, to sealing. The erection of the necessary buildings at the site of tht. new Tolaga Bay bridge to span the Uawa River has* been commenced by the contractor. The steelwork has been arriving for the structure and it is thought that an early •tart will be made on the 'bridge. A lender has been let for the bidding of a raised approach from the vicinity of the blacksmith's shop to the southern snd of the bridge. At the northern outlet from Tolaga Bay a contract has been let for one mile of re-formation and sealing, starting from the Tolaga Bay Inn, where the present sealing stops. Several of the corners on this section of the road- will be eased considerably, the main £ one being where the road meets the Uawa River. The new road will start three chains oack from the present corner and finish about the same distance on the other side.
