P.B. TURF CLUB
ANNUAL MEEXEfCr: HELD UNUSUAL ATTENDANCE KEEN. COMMITTEE POLL The unusually strong -muster of members, at the annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club, held this afternoon, taxed the accommodation of- the A. and P. Association's rooms, as piany! finding standing room only, as were accommodated with chairs. The gathering was presided over by Mr. F. Toleiton, and the report and balance sheet, as reviewed in the Herald recently, indicated a more flourishing state of affairs than has been apparent for years. The president commented that the spirit of optimism with which the club looked forward to the future was. general throughout, the Dominion. It. was not necessary in emphasise the value of racing in this district, or the. contributions the sport in lloyerty. Bay '>a.<J made to the turf' in other, centres and even in Australia, where; horses from here had won substantial stakes in good company. . The general financial position, said Mr. Tolerton, had improved' greatly, and- the- committee had thought it well to clear up" matters of bad debts and depreciation, and anything in the financial' statements of. previous years which needed attention. He compared the results of the respective meetings with those of last season, to the advantage of the 1935-55 year, and complimented Mr. A. J. Tumbull on his excellent work in enrolling new members," his "tally"' having exceeded 99 to date'. (Applause.) " The motion; for the adoption oi the report and. balance sheet, moved by f the chairman, and seconded by Mr. -I. J., Spratt, was carried unanimously. FEES The meeting, on the motion of the chairman, adopted without discussion a proposal, duly notified to reduce the membership fee from £3 3s to £2 4s, Mi- L. J. Smaill seconding the motion. ' The. election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. F. Tolerton: vice-president, Mr. F. <}. Loisel. ' The polling for the three seats on the committee available for election was unusually interesting, ovct 170 ivotes. being exercised, many of them by-proxy. In.* the course of a general discus■sion, it was generally agreed that an increase. i.P stakes for local meetings should be made as early as practicable, the presidept. remarking that the time wjas ripe for a start in an k upward movement in stakes, with the ; object of improving the inducements to visiting owners. Several speakers supported the president, who. later mentioned that .£&0 additional had been added to the : programme-of the last winter meeting, and £BO to that of the forthcoming spring meeting. The donations of trophies for the winter meeting had helped the gathering materially.
