NEW TYPE OF THEATRE
ENTRANCE IN CENTRE WHAKATANE BUILDING A type of picture theatre new to eastern districts of the North Island will be .erected shortly in Whakatane by Whakatane Amusements, Limited. The entrance will be in the centre of llie •theatre, - patrons coming from the street, through a long foyer and up through the floor of the auditorium, which will be sloped: back from the screen lb the projecting i-ooin. Seating accommodation will be provided for 600 people, and provision is being made for central lighting, and also for heating, while the whole work will be artistically finished to make it one of the most .attractive theatres in towns of a similar size. The theatre .will have its main entrance to the Strand, and will extend tln'ough the entire block to the street at the back, a total length of about 130 ft. The width will be 42ft. Two shops will be constructed on either side of- the entrance', which will be 15ft. wide, arid this will lead to steps 10ft wide;up through the floor of the auditorium in the centre of the building. Stalls patrons, will descend a few steps to gain admission to the stalls, those desiring seating in the rear rising a few steps, the seats extending back above the shops to the projecting room, which will face the Strand. This arrangement will allow one attendant to control all admissions. • •-■■■..
Messrs. Burr and Mirfield, Gisborne, haVe designed the building in accordance with the latest model by-laws formulated bv the Government for earthquake resisting buildings, and it" will be specially ventilated and heated, with central lighting of the latest type; along the ceiling.. _ The finish jnside will be of modem style -of texture plaster, with special acoustic celotex on the backwall.
