Flitch, a member of the New Zealand Stocking League, and other well-known organisations in Wellington, has left for Ceylon, where s!:e will represent the New Zealand Y.M.C.A. at the Eastern Regional Congress to be held at Colombo from October i'l to liS. After the conference she hopes to pay a short visil to India.

Dr. Gerda Eichbaum, it graduate ot Heidelberg and other European universities, arrived by the Remiiera to -take up an appointment as language mistress at W.oodford House School, Havelock North. As a student. teacher and writer, Dr. Eichbaum has travelled widely and, in her spare time, proposes to study the history, literature and economic conditions ot New Zealand. She also proposes to contribute to German and Swiss publications.

.Miss Christine Pair, daughter ,of Sir .Tames Parr, who until recently was High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, arrived in Sydney from England last week, and is staying with Mrs. J. A. Carpenter, of "Castlefield," Edgecliff, for a few days before continuing on to N'ew Zealand. Sir .Fames will return to New Zealand and spend a holiday here, before he and his daughter leave to make their permanent, home in England. The prettiest and most picturesque wedding that Stratford lias witnessed for a long time was celebrated in the Catholic Church recently, when the Mayoress, Miss Alary Elizabeth (Molly) McMillan, only daughter of the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, was married to Mr. Russell Kirkwood, only son of Mr. and Mis. H. Kirkwood, Pembroke r.oad. The Rev. Father Kennedy officiated the nuptial mass.

Savage Club Ladies' Night. One of the most eagerly anticipated social functions of the year, the Gisborne Savage Club ladies' night, again drew a large and enthusiastic audience to the City Hall on Thursday night, when the Savages entertained their wives and friends with a delightful and amusing programme. The native atmosphere was introduced into the meeting by a Maori meeting house erected to one side of the hall, where the rangatira, Savage Fred Tolerton, and other members of the executive- ruled over the gathering. Greenery, bamboo ami palms were used for the decoration or the hall, while on either side of tin- stage green tikis adorned I lie wall. Small tables decorated with slender vases of Iceland poppies, ixias and autumn tinted leaves were arranged at intervals around the hall, and dining an interval a dainty supper was served from them.

After a speech of welcome to the wahines by the rangatira, the opening

ode and chorus of welcome to the guests was sung. Then Followed a delightful programme. comprising orchestral numbers, vocal solos, humorous sketches, conjuring tricks and male choruses. 'The programme was brought lo a close with the singing of.the closing ode, followed by "Good Night Ladies"' and the National Anthem. At the conclusion of the evening it was announced that the programme would be presented again next Wednesday evening as a benefit for the W.E.C.M.R. Band.

St. John Ladies' Guild St. John Ladies' Guild held a most enjoyable afternoon in St. Joint's Church on Wednesday, when the hostesses were Mesdames Steele, Dennis, and Wallace, assisted by Mrs. McOullough. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdanies Simpson, ji.ni.,. iShelton, and Aires, and Canon A. F. Hall. The hall was beautifully decorated with bowls of Iceland poppies and flowering shrubs. Two interesting competitions provided much amusement, the winners being Mrs. Turnbull, with Mrs. Birch second, and Miss H. Walkins, with Mrs. Birch second. A lucky number competition was won by Mrs. A. Glare, A beautiful baby's outfit donated by the president, Mrs. E. Trowell, was won by Mrs. McCullongli.

At the conclusion of the afternoon the president moved a hearty vole of thanks to the hostesses. The next gathering is to be held on October 14, when Mesdames Clare. Birch and Watkins will be the hostesses.

Te ITapara Anglican Ladies' Guild A very enjoyable flag five-hundred card evening was held on Wednesday by the members of the Te ITapara Ladies' Guild. :• ' '

The players ai the winning table were Mr, and Mrs. Rathbone, Miss E. Whitley, and Mr. T. Venning, the prize for most, flags going to Mr. Dongal. and Mrs. Sargisson receiving another.

Gisborne Business & Professional Women

The, Gisborne Business and Professional Women's Club held its fortnightly meeting in Le Grand Cafe on Tuesday evening, Mrs. Hugh Jones presiding over a fair attendance ot members.

The Rev. A. .1. 11. and Mrs. Dow were the guests of the club for tea. After te.il, Mr. Dow gave an address on one of the most famous men of the world ,to-day, Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Members found this tall; both very interesting and instructive. On tinmotion of the president, the speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. P.B. Rowing Club's Card Party.

Held in the chili's hall on Thursday evening, the Poverty Bay Rowing Club's flag five-hundred party was well attended, .1-1 tables of players being present for the final of the September aggregate. -Next ■ Thursday evening will see the start of the aggregate for next month.

The monthly meeting of the Matakaoa Women's Institute was'held on Saturday. Sept.. 19. being presided over by Mrs. Ilalliwell. There was an exceptionally good attendance. Great amusement was caused when each member wsa called on to tell a Scotch joke. There was a wonderful display _of (lowers, many hunches being sold after being judged, bringing in Vis 3d. Iho best decorated bowl was won by Mrs. Pairlie, with Mrs. Cowan second, and Mrs. Taylor third. Mrs. Branson took first and' second in the vase of spring flowers, with Mesdames Hitchcock and I'earee tying for third. Mrs. Askew got first and second place for the best, display of anenomes, with Airs. Cowan third.' Mesdames Rudland and Metcalfe tied for first in the best show of daffodils, with Mesdames Ilalliwell and Fraser second and third respectively. Mrs. Weaning agreed to help at the trades table, and Miss Johnstone and Mrs. McMillan to iii the position of librarians. The roll call, childhood sayings, was well responded to. A most interesting address was given by Sister May Gardiner, all listening with keen 'interest to her -comments and views, which ,at times caused hearty laughter. Members regretted that she could not come more often, for no doubt new spirit was put into them by her presence. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded toMie'r and Mrs. McCliskie.

A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames N. Moore, Xickerson and T'ardoe, and willing helpers. The singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant meeting to a close. Townswomen's Guild

On Monday evening members of the Townwomen's Guild held a delightful evening in the Parish Mall tended to the hiisbands of members to introduce them to the activities of the guild, and to the talent that has been found since the guild was formed. There were 250 members and friends present, and a jolly evening was spent with musical items, community singing and dancing. The programme, opened with the singing of the ode, followed by a speech of welcome to the visitors given by the chairman, Mm. J. S. Paulds, who* gave a brief outline on the aims of the guild. The musical section delighted those present with a 30-minute entertainment, which took the form of a nigger plantation scene presented with songs. The quaint actions and costumes of tnc performers aroused many laughs, and everyone enjoyed the items immensely, This was followed by three-minuto speeches, Mr. Bould being called upon

to speak on townwomen's guilds, He compliment I'd them on the work done, and said that very soon they Would cause a traffic jam on guild day, as they bad gained so many new members. Mr. Rhodes' speech on "A perfect wife" caused much merriment.. and was cleverly responded to by Mrs. Scoit autr Mrs. Badham, who described their idea of a perfect husband. Mrs. Mereditl gave a much appreciated recitation, "-' Happy Afternoon," by Barrio Paine and as an encore she gave "Sheltered.' Mrs. Hammond then sang a deliglitfu song, which was received with enthn s

;islic applause. During an interlude the. gardening section presented Mrs. Faulds with a bouquet, with best wishes from the guild members. A clover and amusing play entitled "Letters" was charmingly presented by (he drama section, those taking part being Mesdames Muis. Cameron and Dennis. Mrs. P. Barry gave a beautifully rendered vocal solo, followed by community singing led by Mrs. Barry, assisted by the members of the musical section.

A dainty supper was handed round informally, and afterwards the floor was cleared for dancing, which was enjoyed until midnight. Mrs. Lentill, the guild pianist, acted as accompanist, and those who contributed dance numbers were Mesdames Bould, Hunter and Lentill. The supper hostesses were Mesdame* Henderson, Rhodes, and Winter. At the conclusion of the evening Mr. Bould called for three cheers for the. ladies, and remarked that they had all had a delightful and happy evening.
