TE ARAROA HOSPITAL
REQUEST FOR REOPENING WAIAPU ATTITUDE (Herald Correspondent.) The Director-General of Health, Dr. M. H. Watt, advised the Waiapu Hospital Board at this week’s meeting that a request for re-opening the Te Araroa Hospital had keen received, and asked for details -of Matakaoa patients treated at Te Puia. The secretary, Mr. J. Todd, read his reply, which was to the effect that the number of Matakaoa patients treated at Te Puia Hospital during the, past 12 months totalled 48. He was not aware, his reply went on. of any ease in which the transport of patients from Te Araroa to the hospital bad adversely affected the patient. He had inquired about this from. Dr. N. R. Mackay, until recently medical sup'erintendent, who said be could not recollect any such case. “The main road from Te Araroa to Gisborne,” further stated the secretary s letter, “passes Te Puia Hospital and is metalled through its whole length. Service cars cover this route and taxis are always available. The board, on proper occasions, had paid the cost of transport to the hospital for indigent residents of the Matakaoa County .and in some cases the service car firm has carried patients free.
“For about 18 months past the board has subsidised,” concluded the lottoi. “the local medical practitioner to enable him to make the trip to Te Araroa tor the benefit, of residents in that locality who desired to consult the doctor.
Tho secretary's letter was approved by the board. v
