Next Monday, September 28, is Do minion Day.

Dr. Merton Hodge, formerly of Gisborne, has adapted a play from the Hungarian, which Mr. Henry Sherek will produce in London about October 1.

The question of participating in the publicity scheme embracing Rotorua, Opotiki, ’Gisborne, Wairon, Napier and Hastings, was discussed at, a meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council. It was decided to take two pages in the booklet, at a cost of £3O.

The first English stamps bearing the head of King Edward VIII have reached Gisborne by air mail. Only three denominations have been issued ns yet, a green halfpenny, a brown penny-halfpenny, and a blue tvvopcncchnlfpenny. The colours are exceedingly rich.

Imported from England at a cost of roughly £3OOO, the new pumping machinery required for the Ahuriri Lagoon reclamation works has arrived in Napier, and is now in readiness for installation. The bringing into commission of Ihis equipment will expedite the work of dewatering the lagoon area on the northern side of the main outfall drain, where a large tract of land is still under water. "One of our most pleasing duties in presenting the report is to record the continued activity of the Poverty Bay Cricket Umpires’ Association. Cricketers in this district owe a great deal to those enthusiasts who attend and give their services as umpires every Saturday,” slates the annual report of the Poverty Bay Cricket- Association. "The Cmpires' Association has made every effort to improve the standards of umpiring, and the thanks of the association arc due to the umpires for their valued assistance and support.”

In his final monthly report to the Poverty Bay Electric Power Board today, Mr. V. E. Sanders, the manager, stated that the revenue from sales of current for the five months ended on August 31 was as under: —Lighting, £11,288 (1935, £10,591); cooking and heating, £7858 (£6796); waterheating, £1902 (£1559); power, £2767 (£2618); totals, £23,815 (£21,564). The chairman, Mr. F. It. Ball, remarked that the effect of daylight-saving would he noted in the revenue from electricity sales, and that- next winter the board also would find that shorter working hours in shops would have their effect. The latter problem would bo met when it arose, however.

The condition of the wickets at the Oval was the subject of much comment among cricketers last summer, and it was contended that no batsman could have done justice to himself on the wickets made available for club fixtures. The annual report of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association details' the steps taken to secure the services of a permanent groundsman for the Oval, and expresses the hope that the extensive top-dressing and resowing undertaken at the close of the last season will effect an improvement for the coming summer. The report also notes with satisfaction that owing to the early close of the Rugby Union's programme of matches it has been possible to, make a start in preparing the wickets at a much earlier date than usual.

A complaint that in calling for tenders for the supply of motor tyres, for the use of the board, insufficient time had been given for one firm to consult its head office in regard to prices, was put before the Poverty Bay ElectricPower Board to-day by Mr. C. Mills. The firm had received word only at midday on the day on which the tenders had, closed, he said. The chairman, Mr. F. R. Ball, stated 1 that all firms had received the same notice, which was short owing to a rumour that prices were due to rise suddenly. Actually there would have been no necessity to consult bead offices about the prices, since apparently tyre prices were finally fixed on lists supplied to local ifii-ms. The anticipated risie bin til not taken place, but the board, no doubt, would remember that if the rise eventuated. it would have come short notice.

The opinion that, the linking up of Austria with the German nation would have beneficial results to Austria was expressed Ivy Hr. Stuart Secular, Napier, in the course of a recent interview. Dr. Scoular has just returned to Napier from a tour abroad, embracing portion of the Continent. Austria was not much bigger than Otago, Dr Scoular said, yet it accommodated 2,000,000 people. Vienna was of great importance to Germany, as it was on the trade route, between Germany in (lie north, Italy in the south, Britain on the west, and the Orient on the east. Conditions in Austria were certainly improving. A fair was hold in Vienna twice yearly, when 30,000 representatives of tho nations purchased goods. The people of this country at present considered their work more seriously than their play, as they had no hairholiday. All their sports and games were played on a Sunday, even international Rugby matches. They were only too glad to have work to go to without having half-holidays.
