Having completed over 40 years’ service with the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr. F. if. Garth, postmaster at Milton, will retire on superannuation on October 8.
Three painters who were working in Auckland on Saturday morning in contravention of the 40-hour week agreement came before the notice of the secretary to the Painters’ Union, Mr. H. Campbell, who stated that if the practice persisted he would take appropriate steps to stop it., lie added there was a good deal of it being done in Auckland. It was said by another union secretary that there were instances of men accepting Saturday work at cut rates, a practice that was against the interests of employers and members of trade unions. A visiting card of a Siamese princess is one of the souvenirs which Mr. John W. JI. Piper, a mining engineer who has spent many years in Siam, lias in his possession. The card is made of a pressed palm leaf, cut into the shape of a. normal European card. On one side is the name in English, “Princess Poon
Disktil,” and on the other side the name is printed in Siamese. Mi - . Piper, who is a native of Christchurch and is visiting the city after a long absence abroad, tells fascinating stories of Bangkok and its splendours. He thinks that the English-educated aristocrats of Siam are among the most cultured people in the world, although their glory has faded since the abdication of the King of Siam.
