LUXURY BUSES

SPEED AND COMFORT MAMMOTHS OF THE ROAD “The . most wonderful things 1 have ever travelled in,” was how Mr. YV. I!. Cunningham, Dunedin manager of the Union Steam Ship Company expressed his opinion of the buses he had seen in the United States. Mr. Cunningham-noted-many new and interesting things'during his recent trip _to America, but that which impressed him most was the comfort and organisation of the bus services. One bus service in particular, upon which he travelled, covered the whole of the United States, controlling a fleet of over 3GCO buses. These machines had a- maximum speed of 80 miles an hour, but, on the trips averaged about 50 miles an hour. Each weighed 25 tons and could seat 37 passengers. In the later models the engine was at the rear of the machine. The services covered routes totalling 50,000 miles. Tlie drivel's of the buses were very considerate, and' although the speed averaged approximately 50 miles an hour proper cautions, were taken. It. was noticeable that at the conclusion of the trip many passengers would stop and thank their driver for the pleasant journey and for his careful driving. Mr. Cunningham said he had been told that some of those men had 1 records of driving several hundred thousand miles without even a scratch on the surface of a bus. If one- desned sleeping 'berths they could he obiainod on the buses.
