U.S. ELECTIONS
STRAW VOTE RESULT ROOSEVELT BEHIND PHILADELPHIA, July 21. Students of political prospects were greatly interested to-day by the publication of the first results obtained in tlvo Farm Journal straw vote on the forthcoming Presidential election. They indicate that the Republican, Air. Langdon, Governor of Kansas, has a slight lead over President Roosevelt among fanners in 21 of tlio 32 States so l’ar polled. Polls taken by the Farm Journal have, in tho past, proved remarkably accurate forecasts of how farmers would vote in Presidential elections. Although the present poll is still far from being complete those in char go of it hold that the 50,000 opinions already recorded can be taken as a “reliable sample” ol farm sentiment because they come from many widelyseparated points. Tho Republican nominee has received 25,307 votes to Air. Roosevelt's 22,5C0, while Air. Norman Thom,as, tho Socialist candidate, received 401, and Mr. William Lcinkc, the so-called “Third Party” candidate, received 291.
The States favouring Air. London include Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin 1 .
Mr. Lnndon, who has returned to Topeka, the capital of Kansas, from his holiday in tho Rocky Mountains, will make his first important speech of the campaign next Thursday. He will then formally accept nomination as Republican candidate. He is expected to. make a strong bid for the farmers' support.
