AUSTRALIAN TOURNEY SARAZEN PROMINENT (Elec. Tel. Copyright—TTnitod Press Assn.) MELBOURNE, Sept. 24. The Australian open golf championship opened to-day at the Metropolitan course in wet weather. Sarazen and Hattcrslcy led in the first round with 70. Then came M. Ryan and F. McMahon 71, 11. Williams 73, and <T. Ferrier 76, WOMEN’S CONTEST MID-CANTERBURY PLAY MISS. HORWELL CITAMPTON (Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. The Mid-Canterbury ladies’ golf senior championship was won by Miss J. llovwcll, Iliglillchl, with rounds of 75 and 77, making a total of 152. Mrs. 'Grant, Highfield, was the runner-up with 88, 84—172. The junior title was won by Airs. O'Shea, Russely, with rounds of 95 and 91, making a. total of 186. Mrs. Iv. Gresson. of Christchurch, was tlie runnerup with 96, 91—187.
