"SMELLING THE BOTTOM"

(')ianiian. nor the harbourmaster, Captain .1. P. Crawford, would verify the report. It is reported that the incident occurred at approximately 7 o'clock., and the vessel did not berth until 8 o'clock. Captain Crawford said the delay was occasioned by the Tamaroa "smelling the bottom.'' In plainer terms it meant that the vessel was in shallow water, and owing to the propellers setting up a strange motion the vessel had got into fi position in which it was difficult to manoeuvre her.
