September 24, 1936. Pamela Dear, — Everything's buzzing along merrily in old Gi'sborne just now, and on the farm we are terribly busy. Sheep work keeps the men-folk out aii day, and at night they come home simply ravenous. Hence poor old me has to do double shifts in the kitchen and no overtime rates either. However, thanks to my growing knowledge, I can keep the table varied and I can also keep the kitchen budget within bounds, which Dad says is meritorious. This week in browsing around McKeaque's I picked from the shelves a delicious Captain Camp Pie sold at only 1/- a tin. With spiced onions at 1/4 a large bottle it makes a lovely coid luncheon dish. Sardines in oil, five tins for 1/-, served with lettuce and other cold vegetables, also find favour with our family. Jellies too are popular. Strang's Crystals, five packets for 1/-, provide all sorts of nice jellies. Have you ever tried Lushus Canadian Gelatine dessert? They are extremely daintily flavoured, and a 6d packet makes such a lot in just a few minutes. I have been brightening up the old kitchen lately. The floors I treated with a dark oak stain at 1/6 a tin. Made a jolly good job, and it looks so nice. With the Summer coming along health is a question, and we are all great believers in a regular drink of Andrew's Liver Salts. They are really invigorating, and a 2/4 tin lasts a long time. There aro smaller tins at 1/4. You should try one if you want pep to run up Wellington hills. Cheerio until next week, when I shall tell you more about McKeague's, our most delightfully modern grocery store. Affectionately yours, PAT.
