Supervision and transport costs in connection with relief were frequently greater than the completed value of the works. The .Minister said he hud carefully considered the position and was arranging for the majority of the men to be transferred to sustenance. lie asked, however, for the co-operation of the council in retaining the natives in employment, to avoid their being placed on sustenance.
