LADY ALINGTON

DIES AT AGE OF 33 FINE SWIMMER LONDOX, Aug. 14. Lady Aliugton, who died after an operation for acute appendicitis in London last week-end, had scarcely known what it was to be ill in the 33 years of her life. She was described as a "civilised Amazon." She was the finest woman swimmer in the peerage. She swam with her dark hair unprotected by a cap. Before her marriage she was Lady Mary Ashley-Cooper. Her brother, Lord Ashley, eldest son of the Earl o! Shaftesbury, was the first husband of the actress, Sylvia Hawkes, now Mrs. Douglas Fairbanks. Lady Alington was a godchild of Queen Mary. Her daughter, Mary Anne Elizabeth, is the godchild of the Duchess of York. Her marriage in 1928—a "gold and silver" wedding—was one of the events of the little season of that year. The three daughters of Lord Beaurhamp Lady Letticc, LadSibell, and Lady Mary Lygon—were her bridesmaids.'
